The foundations and individuals featured in Do More Than Give were nominated by their peers through a global survey distributed by FSG in 2010. More than 1,500 foundation executives and philanthropy experts were asked to nominate a select group of peers that employed some or all of the six catalytic practices identified in Do More Than Give. These practices were based on the framework articulated in Leslie Crutchfield’s previous book, Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits, coauthored with Heather McLeod Grant (Wiley 2008). Combining that framework with FSG’s principles of catalytic philanthropy, the authors of Do More Than Give set out to understand how donors create significant wide-scale change.
